Kansas Crime Victims Bill of Rights (K.S.A. 74-7333)

  1. Victims should be treated with courtesy, compassion and with respect for their dignity and privacy and should suffer the minimum of necessary inconvenience from their involvement with the criminal justice system.

  2. Victims should receive, through formal and informal procedures, prompt and fair redress for the harm which they suffered.

  3. Information regarding the availability of criminal restitution, recovery of damages in a civil cause of action, the crime victims compensation fund and other remedies and the mechanisms to obtain such remedies should be made available to victims.

  4. Information should be made available to victims about their participation in criminal proceedings and the scheduling, progress and ultimate disposition of proceedings.

  5. The views and concerns of victims should be ascertained and the appropriate assistance provided throughout the criminal process.

  6. When the personal interests of victims are affected, the views or concerns of the victim should, when appropriate and consistent with criminal law and procedure, be brought to the attention of the court.

  7. Measures may be taken when necessary to provide for the safety of victims and their families and to protect them from intimidation and retaliation.

  8. Enhanced training should be made available to sensitize criminal justice personnel to the needs and concerns of victims and guidelines should be developed for this purpose.

  9. Victims should be informed of the availability of health and social services and other relevant assistance that they might continue to receive the necessary medical, psychological and social assistance through existing programs and services.

  10. Victims should report the crime and cooperate with law enforcement authorities.

Johnson County/Overland Park

The Johnson County District Attorney's Office will host an Art Exhibit at the Johnson County Central Library, 9785 W 87th St in Overland Park, displaying through art the impact of crime on victims through the month of April.  For more information about the Art Exhibit, please contact Launy Russeel at 913-715-3094 or launy.russell@jocogov.org.

Johnson County/Shawnee

Lyon County/Emporia

Lyon County is hosting a dinner and program on April 19, 2010 at 6:00 pm in honor/memory of those crime victims we have served.  This event will be held in the Fellowship Hall at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1508 West 12th Avenue, Emporia.  Reservations can be made by calling  Vicky Lyon at 341-3319 or e-mailed to vlyon@lyoncounty.org.  Reservations are not required but we highly encourage individuals to do so.

Reno County/ Hutchinson

April 15th Community Night Downtown- 7:30 PM Candle Lighting Ceremony marking Crime Victim's Rights Week and honoring crime victims and survivors.  Located across from Ave A Park on Main Street)

April 19th Denim Day- Business and organizations throughout reno County will have the opportunity to "dress down" to take a stand against Crime.

April 20th Victim-Centered Awareness/Crime Training to Law Enofrcement Agencies- 11:30 am-1 pm Reno County Courthouse, Veteran's Room in the basement.  Speaker Darla Neal.  Lunch provided, RSVP required.

April 21st  Clergy Day- 8:30 am Breakfast at Promise Regional Medical Center, Basement Conference Room C.  Speaker Keith Schroeder, reno County District Attorney will provide information to local clergy about victims's rights.  Breakfast provided, RSVP required.

April 22nd  Disability and Violence: Facts you need to know- 2:00-3:30 pm Hutchinson Public Library Auditorium.  Contact John Eberly at Prairie Independent Living Resource Center at 620-663-3989 or Candace Dixon at SA/DVC 620-665-3630.

Sedgwick County/Wichita

The Wichita, KS Chapter of Parents Of Murdered Children will hold their Annual Memorial Service at the POMC Monument at 10th & Bitting in North Riverside Park at 7:00 PM on Tuesday April 20th 2010.

Shawnee County/Topeka

LifeHouse Child Advocacy Center is hosting the LifeHouse CAC's Children's Memorial Flag Day on Friday April 23rd, 2010 from 9:00-10:30 am at the Carousel at Gage Park.  The day is recognized nationally to remember children whose lives are lost to violence each year.  LifeHouse Director Kelly Stephens, Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor, and Family Support Specialist Jill Shehi Chapman will each speak.  There will also be entertainment, a symbolic balloon release, and the recognition of the 2009 Child Advocate of the Year, followed by a light breakfast for everyone.  All agencies and individuals are welcome to come and show your support for child abuse victims.  RSVP is requested and any questions can be directed to cac@lifehousecac.com, or 785-232-5433.  Additional information can also be found at www.lifehousecac.com.

Wyandotte County/Kansas City

El Centro has planned the following activities to honor Crime Victim's Rights Week and National Child Abuse Awareness Month.

All Month- Exhibit of artwork by child participants of the Una Ventana Para los Ninos (A Window For Children from A Windo Between WorldsTM) that specializes in the use of art as a healing tool to help children heal from the effects of domestic violence and helps them find their own voices.  The artwork will be on display at Fairway Frames, 2806 W 53rd St in Fairway KS.

April 10: Presentation of "Love Does Not Hurt" to Latino youth who are preparing for confirmation through the Hispanic Ministry, Archdiocese of KCK.  This presentation is a collaboration between El Centro's Si, Se Puede advocates, youth participants, and community partners (poet Angela Cervantes, Safehome Outreach and KDHE's Choose Respect Project)

April 17: Presentation of LaDignidad de la Persona y la Violencia Domestica (A Person's Dignity and Domestic Violence) at the Hispanic Ministries' Regional Encounter 2010.  This encounter is a bi-annual event that targets religious and lay church leaders that work with the Hispanic immigrant community in 15 Midwest Catholic dioceses.  The three part pastoral-social service collaborative project Robles de Justicia (Oaks of Justice) will be presented jointly by Fr. Jesus Olivares from the Hispanic Ministry, Archdiocese of KCK, MUSA grassroots leaders/immigrant survivors, and Elena Morales, Program Coordinator of El Centro's Si, Se Puede Victim Services.
